Skills in History
What Skills Will I Gain in History?
This section will show you all the amazing skills you will learn and develop in history!
Critical Thinking: History always throws up some strange problems! Like, why would a French guy want to be King of England in 1066? Weird! But actually, when you use critical thinking, you will understand the past better
Analysing: It sounds strange, but if you study history you can be the next Sherlock Holmes. The greatest ever detective is fantastic at analysing things to understand them better- and that could be you! You will learn to interpret sources in history.
Debating: who doesn’t love to be able to win an argument? The BEST thing about history is that historians always have different opinions. Studying history will develop your ability to debate and argue!
Literacy: You might not believe it but studying history will help you in your other subjects. As history requires writing, you will develop your writing and spelling skills as well!
Research: it’s all about how you use sources! Not ‘sauces’ such as HP, though! In history, you will be able to look at loads of fantastic sources from the past and then research them to better understand key events. This is super useful at GCSE and something future employers always look for!
Activity: Using this image, see if you can answer these questions:
1. What do you think is happening here?
2. Who are these people, do you think?
3. With a partner, discuss whether or not you think this is showing something good happening or not.
4. Write a short paragraph on your findings and results.
5. Can you find out more about this image using the internet?
